In a strategic move to bolster its financial position, telecom giant Vodafone Idea has secured board approval to raise Rs 2,075 crore from its promoter, the Aditya Birla Group. The decision, announced on April 6, signals a significant development for the embattled telecom operator as it seeks to navigate through challenging market conditions.

Vodafone Idea revealed that its board has greenlit the issuance of up to 1,39.5 crore equity shares to Oriana Investments Pte. Ltd., an entity within the Aditya Birla Group, at an issue price of Rs 14.87 per share, inclusive of a premium of Rs 4.87 per share. This preferential issue, subject to shareholder approval in a General Meeting, is valued at Rs 2,075 crore.

According to a filing by Vodafone Idea, the relevant date for determining the floor price is set for April 8, 2024. Additionally, the telecom giant disclosed that its board has sanctioned an increase in the company’s authorized share capital from the current Rs 75,000 crore to Rs 1 lakh crore.

Under the proposed change, the augmented authorized share capital will be divided into Rs 95,000 crore of equity share capital and Rs 5,000 crore of preference share capital. Vodafone Idea emphasized that these proposals will be presented to shareholders for approval at an extraordinary general meeting scheduled for May 8.

This infusion of capital comes at a crucial juncture for Vodafone Idea, which has been grappling with intense competition and financial pressures in the highly competitive telecom sector in India. The move underscores the Aditya Birla Group’s commitment to supporting the telecom operator amid ongoing challenges and underscores its long-term vision for the company’s growth and stability.

The announcement is likely to instill confidence among investors and stakeholders in Vodafone Idea’s ability to strengthen its financial footing and pursue its strategic objectives in the dynamic telecommunications landscape of India. As the company navigates through evolving market dynamics, the infusion of funds from its promoter group is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping its trajectory in the days ahead.
