In a strategic move aimed at strengthening its financial position, Vedanta Resources, the parent company of Mumbai-based mining giant Vedanta Ltd, has announced plans to deleverage its debt by a staggering $3 billion over the next three years. The decision underscores the company’s commitment to fortifying its balance sheet and optimizing its capital structure.
Navin Agarwal, Vice Chairman of Vedanta Ltd and a key member of the Promoter Group, revealed the ambitious debt reduction strategy during an analyst meeting. Agarwal emphasized that deleveraging is a top priority for Vedanta Resources, with a targeted reduction of $3 billion in debt over the next three years.
“Vedanta Ltd’s robust cash flow, estimated at $3.5-4 billion pre-growth capex for the financial year 2025, will provide ample liquidity to manage secured debt maturities amounting to $1.5 billion,” stated Agarwal, as reported by analysts who attended the meeting.
The company plans to address the financial year 2025 maturities of $1.1 billion, along with interest servicing of nearly $750 million, through various strategic initiatives. These include leveraging brand fees, dividends from operating companies, asset monetization, and other strategic maneuvers.
Agarwal emphasized that Vedanta is actively evaluating its capital structure and exploring multiple avenues to meet its debt obligations. While ruling out a stake sale in the near term, he highlighted the recent divestment transaction as part of the company’s broader strategy to optimize capital allocation.
The recent divestment, executed through Vedanta’s promoter entity Finsider International, generated substantial interest among market participants, including foreign institutional investors (FIIs), domestic institutional investors (DIIs), and retail investors. This move is seen as a prelude to Vedanta’s upcoming demerger announcement, which aims to simplify the group’s corporate structure and create sector-focused independent businesses.
Vedanta’s diverse portfolio spans metals, minerals, oil and gas, traditional ferrous verticals, power, and emerging sectors like semiconductor manufacturing and display glass. The company’s ongoing debt restructuring efforts, coupled with its impending demerger and deleveraging initiatives, underscore its commitment to long-term sustainability and growth.
As Vedanta continues its journey toward financial resilience and strategic transformation, investors and stakeholders await further developments with keen interest, anticipating the company’s emergence as a stronger, more agile player in the global market.
