In a landmark decision, the United States officially greenlit the sale of 31 MQ-9B armed drones to India, a deal estimated at nearly $4 billion. The approval, granted on February 1, comes after seven months of negotiations and discussions following India’s expression of interest during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Washington, DC, in June 2023.
The MQ-9B, commonly referred to as “hunter-killer,” represents a next-generation remotely-piloted aircraft designed and manufactured by General Atomics Aeronautical, a leading private defense company in the United States. The deal involves 31 High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAVs, with the Navy set to receive 15 SeaGuardian drones, while the Army and the Indian Air Force will each acquire eight land versions known as SkyGuardian.
The MQ-9B SkyGuardian boasts an impressive capability, capable of flying over the horizon via satellite for more than 40 hours in all weather conditions. This long-endurance UAV is pivotal in providing joint forces and civil authorities with real-time situational awareness globally. On the other hand, the SeaGuardian variant can fly over the horizon for over 30 hours and features an anti-submarine warfare mission kit.
A significant aspect of these “Predator” drones is their capacity to carry four laser-guided Hellfire missiles and 450 kg bombs, making them versatile assets for various strategic purposes.
The comprehensive deal includes 31 MQ-9B SkyGuardian aircraft, 161 Embedded Global Positioning and Inertial Navigation Systems (EGIs), 35 L3 Rio Grande Communications Intelligence Sensor Suites, 170 AGM-114R Hellfire missiles, 16 M36E9 Hellfire Captive Air Training Missiles (CATM), 310 GBU-39B/B Laser Small Diameter Bombs (LSDB), and 8 GBU-39B/B LSDB Guided Test Vehicles (GTVs) with live fuses.
While the deal faced initial hurdles due to concerns over the supply of arms from Russia and allegations involving a failed plot, it is now poised to be a game-changer in the Indo-U.S. defense relationship. Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, emphasized that the sale would enhance technology cooperation and military collaboration in the region.
This historic agreement signifies a significant milestone in India’s acquisition of advanced defense technology from the United States and is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping combat strategies amid geopolitical complexities. The MQ-9B armed drones are anticipated to bring about a paradigm shift in India’s defense capabilities, contributing to maritime security and border surveillance in the region.
