Tesla, the pioneering electric vehicle manufacturer led by billionaire Elon Musk, is recalling more than 1.8 million vehicles due to a hood issue that could significantly increase the risk of a crash. This recall affects certain models of the popular 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and 2020-2024 Model Y vehicles. The problem stems from the hood latch assembly’s failure to detect an unlatched hood after it has been opened, which could potentially cause the hood to fully open while the vehicle is in motion, obstructing the driver’s view and heightening the risk of an accident.
Tesla has not reported any crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to this issue. The company began investigating customer complaints about the problem on March 25 in China, initially focusing on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. By mid-April, Tesla identified the cause as a deformation of the latch switch in vehicles in China. Although the rates of occurrence are higher in China than in Europe and North America, the reason for this disparity remains unclear.
As of July 20, Tesla has recorded three warranty claims or field reports in the U.S. that may be linked to the hood issue. In response, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Tesla has released a free software update to address the problem. Vehicle owners will be notified by mail on September 22, and they can also contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
This recall follows another recent recall of Tesla’s futuristic Cybertruck pickup, which has faced four recalls since its U.S. market debut on November 30. The latest Cybertruck recall addresses issues with trim pieces that can come loose and front windshield wipers that may fail.
Tesla’s proactive approach in addressing these safety concerns underscores its commitment to vehicle safety and customer satisfaction. However, the automaker’s challenges with recurring recalls highlight the complexities and high stakes involved in producing cutting-edge electric vehicles at scale.
