Tata Motors Forecasts Moderation in Passenger Vehicle Industry Growth, Yet Optimistic on Electric Vehicle Adoption

In a forecast signaling a potential shift in the trajectory of India’s passenger vehicle (PV) industry, Tata Motors anticipates a moderation in growth to less than 5 percent in the fiscal year 2024-25. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, shared insights during an analyst call, citing challenges and opportunities shaping the sector’s evolution.

Despite a robust 25 percent growth witnessed in the previous fiscal year (FY23), Chandra predicts a deceleration to about 8 percent in FY24, attributing the slowdown to a high base effect. Looking ahead, FY25 is expected to pose challenges with a growth rate dipping below the 5 percent mark, Chandra indicated.

However, amidst the shifting landscape, Chandra remains bullish on the continued growth of electric vehicle (EV) sales, underscoring their resilience despite concerns surrounding the sluggish pace of charging infrastructure development across the country.

“The biggest challenge for EV adoption is the pace of charging infrastructure growth, which lags behind the rate of EV adoption,” Chandra remarked, emphasizing the critical need for infrastructure expansion to support the burgeoning EV market.

Highlighting Tata Motors’ strategic initiatives, Chandra outlined an open collaboration approach to bolstering charging infrastructure, engaging with charge point operators and oil marketing companies to accelerate expansion efforts.

Moreover, Tata Motors aims to fortify its exclusive sales network for EVs, with plans to establish additional outlets in high-demand cities over the next 18 months. Leveraging an expanded product range, including the recent Punch EV launch, the company is poised to capitalize on evolving consumer preferences and market dynamics.

Further underscoring Tata Motors’ commitment to advancing EV adoption, Chandra outlined plans to introduce electric SUV Curvv and Harrier EV in 2024, expanding the company’s footprint in the rapidly evolving EV segment.

In alignment with its micro-market focus strategy, Tata Motors aims to drive penetration and expansion of the EV market, targeting key cities and leveraging its diverse product portfolio to cater to evolving consumer preferences.

As Tata Motors navigates the evolving automotive landscape, characterized by both challenges and opportunities, the company’s proactive approach underscores its determination to drive innovation, sustainability, and growth in India’s mobility ecosystem.
