In a visionary declaration, Tamil Nadu set its sights on a momentous economic milestone—achieving a $1 trillion economy by 2030. Industry and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal articulated this ambitious target on January 7 at the Tamil Nadu Global Investor Meet (GIM) in Chennai.
Minister Goyal outlined the state’s aspirations, emphasizing an annual growth target of 18 percent—an audacious goal aimed at propelling industrialization, creating abundant job opportunities, and inspiring the younger generation to reach for substantial achievements.
During his address at the third edition of the two-day GIM, Goyal advocated for a partnership model between the Centre and state governments to expedite project delivery and foster holistic development. He emphasized that this collaborative spirit, coupled with healthy competition among states, would be pivotal in driving economic growth.
Highlighting recent initiatives, Goyal underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration of developmental projects worth over Rs 20,000 crore in Tamil Nadu, with more initiatives in the pipeline.
The investor meet witnessed a surge in commitments from major industrial players like Tata Electronics, JSW Energy, and TVS Group, pledging substantial investments into the state. Tamil Nadu aims to reclaim its status as a premier investment destination amid intense competition from other Indian states such as Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Telangana.
“We would like to assure every investor coming to India that the Centre and state governments will continue to work together to promote ease of doing business and enhance infrastructure,” reiterated Minister Goyal, emphasizing the pivotal role of the collaboration model.
Acknowledging the brilliance of ISRO project director Nigar Shaji, who led the nation’s groundbreaking space-based solar observatory mission Aditya-L1, Goyal applauded her accomplishments, recognizing her as “the daughter of Tamil Nadu.” The audience paid tribute to the scientist with a standing ovation in her honor.
Highlighting the importance of women-led development, Goyal underscored that 43% of Tamil Nadu’s female workforce contributes to the state’s economic engine. He emphasized that increased participation of women in the workforce would significantly bolster the state’s GDP.
The Tamil Nadu Global Investor Meet concluded with a commitment to sustained collaboration, fostering a conducive environment for investment, innovation, and growth, while paving the way for the state’s transformative journey toward economic prosperity.
