S&P 500 and Nasdaq Reach New Highs Amid AI Momentum, Dow Inches Up After Weak Retail Sales

In a display of the stock market’s resilience and the burgeoning influence of artificial intelligence, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at record highs on Tuesday, driven largely by the explosive growth of Nvidia. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a modest gain amid subdued pre-holiday trading following weaker-than-expected U.S. retail sales data.

    Nvidia’s Meteoric Rise

Nvidia, the semiconductor giant, continued its meteoric rise, overtaking Microsoft to become the world’s most valuable company with a staggering market capitalization of $3.22 trillion. The company’s stock surge has been a major driving force behind the record highs seen in both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq. Other semiconductor stocks followed suit, with Qualcomm, Arm Holdings, and Micron seeing gains between 2.1% and 8.7%, propelling the Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index to a new peak.

Ty Draper, a financial advisor at Beacon Capital Management, succinctly captured the market sentiment: “It’s really the AI story.” The enthusiasm for AI-driven advancements has fueled a rally in tech stocks, with investors keen on the transformative potential of these technologies.

    Mixed Economic Signals

Despite the tech rally, broader economic signals were mixed. U.S. retail sales in May rose by a mere 0.1%, falling short of the 0.3% growth forecast by economists polled by Reuters. However, this was offset by surprisingly strong industrial production and manufacturing output data for the same month.

These economic indicators have led to a slight increase in market bets on two Federal Reserve interest rate cuts this year, despite the central bank’s projections suggesting only one rate easing. Comments from Fed officials, including New York Fed President John Williams and Richmond Fed’s Thomas Barkin, did little to shift market expectations, emphasizing a cautious approach to future rate cuts.

    Sector Performances and Market Reactions

Among the 11 S&P 500 sectors, financials and technology stocks led the advances, up 0.64% and 0.61% respectively. In contrast, communication services and consumer discretionary sectors were the biggest losers. The Nasdaq’s seventh consecutive record high was bolstered by gains in chip stocks, which managed to offset losses in major players like Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta Platforms.

Jim Awad, senior managing director at Clearstead Advisors LLC, noted the market’s steady performance, stating, “That’s why the markets stay unchanged today,” reflecting a day with few surprises and steady trading activity.

    Market Outlook and Company Highlights

The robust performance of AI-related companies and strong earnings reports from tech firms have significantly bolstered equities in recent months. This optimism is reflected in Citigroup’s revised year-end target for the S&P 500, now set at 5,600 points, up from the previous 5,100.

In company-specific news, education technology provider Chegg saw its shares rise by 3.45% following the announcement of job cuts as part of a restructuring effort. On the downside, homebuilder Lennar fell 4.98% after forecasting lower-than-expected third-quarter home deliveries.

    Trading Volume and Holiday Closure

The advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.79-to-1 ratio on the NYSE, with 259 new highs and 93 new lows recorded. Trading volume on U.S. exchanges was 10.96 billion shares, slightly below the 11.79 billion average of the last 20 trading days.

Looking ahead, U.S. markets will be closed on Wednesday in observance of the Juneteenth holiday, giving investors a brief respite to reassess and prepare for the next wave of market movements influenced by global trends and economic data.
