SoftBank Group’s CEO, Masayoshi Son, is reportedly in talks to raise up to a staggering $100 billion for a new chip venture, codenamed Izanagi, which aims to challenge industry titan Nvidia Corp in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg News reported on Friday that the project will focus on supplying semiconductors crucial for AI applications.
According to the report, SoftBank plans to inject $30 billion into the venture, with an additional $70 billion potentially sourced from Middle Eastern institutions. While SoftBank has not officially commented on the matter, the ambitious endeavor underscores the company’s strategic shift towards bolstering its presence in the semiconductor industry.
SoftBank’s existing footprint in the chip sector includes its ownership of approximately 90% of British chip designer Arm, a pivotal asset in the company’s portfolio. SoftBank CFO Yoshimitsu Goto recently emphasized the growing significance of Arm in the AI landscape, referring to the chip designer as “the core of the core” among SoftBank’s group of companies.
The move comes amid increasing demand for AI-related technologies, with Arm reporting robust demand for its central processors to complement Nvidia’s chips for AI applications in data centers. By leveraging its substantial resources and expertise, SoftBank aims to position itself as a formidable competitor in the burgeoning AI chip market.
SoftBank’s foray into the chip venture signals a strategic pivot for the tech investment firm, which has historically been known for its bold investments in startups on an unprecedented scale. The move also reflects SoftBank’s resilience and adaptability in navigating challenging market conditions, as evidenced by its recent return to profit after a string of quarters marked by financial volatility.
While SoftBank’s ambitious plans for the AI chip venture are yet to be confirmed officially, the potential implications of such a venture could reshape the semiconductor landscape and accelerate innovation in AI technology. As the demand for AI continues to surge across various industries, SoftBank’s strategic initiative underscores its commitment to driving technological advancements and shaping the future of AI-driven innovation.
