In a significant move aimed at revolutionizing healthcare through artificial intelligence, Japanese technology investor SoftBank Group has announced the launch of a joint venture with Tempus AI. The collaboration aims to leverage AI to analyze personal medical data and provide treatment recommendations, CEO Masayoshi Son revealed during a briefing in Tokyo.
This initiative is the latest in a series of AI investments by SoftBank, signaling a renewed vigor in their investment activities following a subdued period. SoftBank’s involvement with Tempus began with a $200 million investment in the company during its series G funding round in April, prior to Tempus’s listing on the Nasdaq in June.
The joint venture’s primary goal is to introduce AI-informed treatment and clinical trial recommendations to the Japanese healthcare market. This would mark the first availability of such advanced services outside the United States, Son highlighted.
Both SoftBank and Tempus are set to invest 15 billion yen ($93 million) each into the venture, which is anticipated to finalize in July, pending closing conditions, according to a SoftBank release.
The collaboration aims to utilize Tempus AI’s robust data analysis capabilities to transform patient care in Japan by providing highly personalized and efficient treatment options. Tempus, known for its cutting-edge technology in the healthcare sector, will bring its expertise to the Japanese market, promising advancements in how medical data is utilized for patient care.
However, Tempus has faced challenges on the financial front, with its share price dropping to around $27.50 on June 26 from its initial public offering price of $37 on June 14. Despite this, the joint venture with SoftBank represents a strategic step forward, potentially stabilizing and boosting Tempus’s market position through the introduction of their services in a new, lucrative market.
This venture underscores SoftBank’s commitment to expanding its AI portfolio and its strategic focus on integrating AI into various industries, including healthcare. As both companies prepare to embark on this innovative journey, the Japanese healthcare system stands to benefit significantly from the advancements in AI-driven medical treatment and clinical trial recommendations.
