In a day marked by fluctuations, the Indian rupee rebounded by 4 paise to settle at 83.41 (provisional) against the US dollar on Monday, supported by foreign capital inflows and a surge in domestic equities. The recovery followed initial resistance faced by the rupee against a strong greenback and rising crude oil prices, reflecting the intricate balance of market dynamics.
At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee commenced trading at 83.46 against the dollar. Throughout the session, it oscillated between 83.41 and 83.52, eventually closing at 83.41, marking a modest gain from its previous close.
Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst — Commodity and Currency at LKP Securities, highlighted the influence of market volatility on the rupee’s movements. Trivedi noted that while the rupee displayed stability, investors remained vigilant ahead of the upcoming interest rate decision by the US Federal Reserve, which could potentially impact the currency’s trajectory.
Investor caution was palpable as market participants awaited the outcome of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, scheduled to commence on Tuesday, with the interest rate decision expected to be announced on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six major currencies, recorded a marginal uptick of 0.13% to reach 105.58. Simultaneously, Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, registered a modest increase of 0.15% to reach USD 88.53 per barrel.
Domestically, the equity markets witnessed a mixed performance, with the Sensex declining by 188.50 points (0.25%) to settle at 74,482.78, and the Nifty falling by 38.55 points (0.17%) to close at 22,604.85.
Amidst market volatility, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) emerged as net buyers in the capital markets on Monday, injecting a net sum of Rs 169.09 crore, as per exchange data.
