Rupee Inches Up Marginally Against US Dollar Amidst Economic Indicators and Foreign Flows

In a nuanced dance on Wednesday, the Indian rupee saw a marginal uptick of 1 paisa, settling at 83.50 against the US dollar. This modest gain occurred as the US currency retreated from its recent highs. However, the local unit faced headwinds from sustained foreign fund outflows and a tepid performance in domestic equities.

Foreign exchange traders anticipate the USD/INR pair to maintain a range-bound trajectory with a slight inclination towards weakness. Anuj Choudhary, a Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, highlighted, “The rupee gained on weakness in the US Dollar. However, weak domestic markets and FII selling capped sharp gains.”

Choudhary further elaborated on the factors likely to influence the rupee’s movement, citing potential impacts from US economic indicators such as retail sales and CPI data, alongside India’s trade balance figures.

Speaking of trade, India’s merchandise exports in April 2024 saw a marginal uptick to USD 34.99 billion compared to the year-ago period, while imports surged to USD 54.09 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of USD 19.1 billion.

Meanwhile, on the global front, the dollar index, measuring the greenback against a basket of currencies, experienced a slight dip to 104.85, influenced in part by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s remarks regarding the Producer Price Index (PPI) data.

In the realm of commodities, Brent crude futures rose marginally to USD 82.53 per barrel, posing potential concerns for the rupee given India’s reliance on oil imports.

Domestically, the equity markets witnessed a mixed performance, with the BSE Sensex declining by 117.58 points, while the NSE Nifty settled slightly lower by 17.30 points.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued their trend of net selling in the capital markets, offloading shares worth Rs 4,065.52 crore, as per exchange data.

On the macroeconomic front, wholesale inflation surged to a 13-month high of 1.26 per cent in April, driven by escalating prices of food items, particularly vegetables. However, despite inflationary pressures, Moody’s Ratings projected a robust 6.6 per cent expansion for the Indian economy in the current fiscal year, buoyed by strong credit demand.

As the rupee navigates through a maze of global economic indicators and domestic factors, market participants remain vigilant, anticipating its next move amidst a backdrop of evolving economic landscapes.
