Rupee Inches Up by 2 Paise to 83.71 Against US Dollar in Early Trade

The Indian rupee experienced a slight uptick, rising by 2 paise to 83.71 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday, following a marginal dip in the dollar’s value in overseas markets.

At the interbank currency exchange, the rupee opened at 83.72, gaining 1 paisa from the previous day’s close. In early trading, the domestic currency fluctuated within a narrow range of 83.70 to 83.72.

Forex traders attributed the rupee’s modest gain to the decline in dollar rates overseas. However, the rise in Brent crude oil prices counterbalanced these gains. The dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six major currencies, fell by 0.19% to 104.36. Conversely, Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, saw a 1.49% increase to USD 79.80 per barrel.

Market participants are keenly awaiting the US Federal Reserve’s rate announcement later today, with speculation that the Fed might signal a potential rate cut as early as September.

In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex exhibited volatility, initially rising over 200 points in early trade to reach a record high. As of 9:35 am, the Sensex was trading at 81,517.75, up 62.35 points.

Despite the positive movements, foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital markets on Tuesday, offloading shares worth Rs 5,598.64 crore, according to exchange data.

The interplay of these factors—the decline in the dollar, rise in Brent crude prices, and market speculation about the US Fed’s rate decisions—continues to shape the dynamics of the rupee and the broader financial market.
