The Indian rupee closed marginally stronger on Friday, edging up by 0.1% against the U.S. dollar, buoyed by inflows despite a downward trend among its Asian counterparts ahead of the anticipated release of crucial U.S. labor market data later in the day.
The rupee concluded at 83.15 against the greenback, a slight uptick from its previous session’s closure at 83.23. Despite this daily rise, the local currency showed minimal variance in its week-on-week performance.
Compared to its Asian peers, the rupee has demonstrated a more robust start in 2024. This stands in contrast to the decline witnessed by most Asian currencies on Friday, influenced by the strengthening dollar amidst expectations of a delayed rate cut by the United States Federal Reserve. Market indicators suggest a 34% likelihood of the Fed maintaining rates unchanged at its March meeting, a substantial rise from 11.5% on December 29, as per CME Group’s FedWatch tool.
Commenting on recent market movements, an FX trader from a foreign bank highlighted positive flows observed over the past two days. The trader attributed the rupee’s resilience to dollar sales from both state-run and foreign banks, contributing to its strengthened position despite the dollar index hitting its highest level since mid-December. The index appears poised to record its most significant weekly gain since May 2023.
However, market experts caution against expecting a sustained upward trajectory for the rupee. Gaurang Somaiya, a foreign exchange research analyst at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, anticipates a potential retracement for the rupee, envisioning a range of 83.25-83.35 in the upcoming week. Analysts in a Reuters poll, numbering 42, largely anticipate the rupee to maintain its narrow range, with only modest strengthening toward the 83-handle likely by the end of March.
Market attention remains fixed on the eagerly anticipated U.S. non-farm payrolls and unemployment data, slated for release post Indian market hours on Friday. Forecasts suggest an addition of 170,000 jobs in December, with an expected unemployment rate of 3.8%, as per a Reuters poll.
The rupee’s resilience amidst regional trends underscores the complex interplay of global market dynamics shaping currency performances, with investors keenly monitoring key economic indicators for future market trends and currency movements.
