The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that individuals can now exchange Rs 2,000 denomination notes through post offices, expanding the channels available for returning these notes after their withdrawal in May last year.
Reports have emerged of people visiting RBI offices to return the Rs 2,000 notes, prompting the RBI to clarify procedures through a set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on its website. As per the guidelines, individuals can dispatch these notes to any of the 19 RBI issue offices from any post office across the country.
The process involves filling out an online application form available on the RBI’s website and sending the notes via an India Post facility to an RBI issue office.
The decision to phase out the Rs 2,000 notes was made considering their surpassing the expected lifespan and their dwindling usage in public transactions since their introduction post the 2016 demonetization exercise.
The RBI’s data indicates that over 97.38% of the Rs 2,000 notes in circulation as of May 2023 have been returned. Even after the closure of the exchange or deposit window at bank counters, the RBI has extended multiple channels for individuals to exchange or deposit these notes.
According to the FAQ, individuals can exchange or deposit these notes up to a limit of Rs 20,000 at a time across the 19 issue offices and post office-based facilities.
This move by the RBI seeks to ease the process for individuals looking to return or exchange these notes and further encourages the utilization of post office facilities for these transactions.
The RBI’s decision reflects its commitment to streamlining processes and providing varied options for the public to manage currency notes that have been phased out or are no longer actively circulated.
