In the wake of the recent crisis faced by Paytm, the company’s founder and CEO, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, addressed concerns during a virtual town hall with employees, reassuring them that there would be no layoffs. Amidst regulatory challenges with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Sharma emphasized the company’s commitment to resolving issues collaboratively.
Sharma acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the situation, stating, “We are not completely sure of things like what exactly went wrong.” He further assured Paytm employees that they are actively engaging with the RBI and working with other banks for potential partnerships. The CEO expressed gratitude to employees, stating, “You are a part of the Paytm family, and there is nothing to worry about.”
The virtual town hall, attended by 800-900 employees, included Paytm President and COO Bhavesh Gupta, as well as PPBL CEO Surinder Chawla. Together, they addressed the ongoing challenges and outlined the company’s approach to resolving the issues at hand.
On January 31, the RBI directed Paytm Payments Bank (PPBL) to cease onboarding new customers due to “persistent non-compliance and continued material supervisory concerns.” Following a compliance validation report by external auditors, RBI instructed PPBL to halt new deposits, credit transactions, and top-ups in customer accounts after February 29. Users, however, can continue to use their balances or withdraw money without restrictions.
The nodal accounts of Paytm parent One97 Communications and Paytm Payments Services must be terminated by March 15, as per the RBI directive. Despite the challenges, Sharma expressed confidence in resolving the issues, stating that they would reach out to the RBI for guidance.
In response to recent reports, Paytm parent One97 Communications clarified in a filing on February 4 that there has been no investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the founder and CEO for money laundering activities. The company affirmed its cooperation with authorities during past investigations into certain merchants/users on their platforms, denying any involvement in anti-money laundering activities.
Meanwhile, amidst the crisis, stock exchanges have reduced Paytm’s price band for the stock from 20% to 10%, following a 36% decline in the last two days. The company continues to navigate the challenges, focusing on collaboration, transparency, and resolving regulatory concerns.
