Oil Prices Decline Amid Interest Rate Worries, But Supply Constraints Offer Support

In early trading on Friday, crude oil futures experienced a modest decline as market participants grew increasingly concerned about the potential for prolonged higher interest rates in both Asia and the United States. Despite these concerns, falling U.S. oil inventories helped prevent a more significant drop in prices.

As of 0013 GMT, Brent crude futures for August delivery had decreased by 11 cents, settling at $85.60 per barrel. Similarly, U.S. crude futures fell by 9 cents to $81.20 per barrel.

Economic data from Japan revealed a 2.5% increase in core consumer prices last month compared to the previous year. This growth, which was higher than the previous month’s figures, suggests that the Bank of Japan may continue to raise interest rates in the coming months.

In the United States, data released on Thursday indicated a decline in new unemployment benefit claims for the week ending June 14, signaling ongoing strength in the job market. This robust employment landscape has heightened concerns that the U.S. Federal Reserve might maintain higher interest rates for an extended period. Higher interest rates generally exert downward pressure on economic activity and oil demand.

Despite these macroeconomic headwinds, the oil market found some support from the latest data on U.S. crude stockpiles. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), U.S. crude inventories fell by 2.5 million barrels in the week ending June 14, reaching a total of 457.1 million barrels. This drawdown exceeded analysts’ expectations, which had predicted a reduction of 2.2 million barrels.

Moreover, gasoline inventories also saw a significant decrease, dropping by 2.3 million barrels to 231.2 million barrels, contrary to forecasts that anticipated a 600,000-barrel increase.

“Gasoline finally came to life and posted its first strong report of the summer driving season,” noted Bob Yawger, director of energy futures at Mizuho in New York, emphasizing the unexpected strength in gasoline demand.

While the interplay of economic indicators and inventory data creates a complex landscape for oil prices, the current dynamics underscore the delicate balance between supply concerns and macroeconomic pressures. As traders navigate these factors, the market remains sensitive to both immediate supply changes and longer-term economic signals.
