Navi Mumbai International Airport Set for Commercial Operations by March 2025

The eagerly anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is on track to commence commercial operations by March 31, 2025, according to Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. With approximately 55-60% of the project completed, the airport is expected to significantly ease congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

The NMIA, a prestigious project with an estimated cost of Rs 18,000 crore, is being developed by the Adani Group and is split into five phases. Once fully operational, it will have a total capacity of accommodating 9 crore passengers annually. The first phase alone will have a capacity of two crore passengers per year. Upon completion of all five phases, the airport will boast four terminals and two runways.

Minister Scindia emphasized that the NMIA will not only enhance air travel capacity but also provide robust connectivity through road, rail, metro, and water transportation.

The NMIA project has been a long-awaited solution to the growing air travel demands in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Situated approximately 35 km away from Mumbai’s existing airport, the NMIA will play a crucial role in reducing congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, which handles millions of passengers annually.

The proposed airport, covering over 1,160 hectares of land, aims to handle 9 crore passengers and 25 lakh tonnes of cargo annually. It is designed with two cargo terminals, one for general aviation, and four passenger terminals. The completion timeline for the entire airport is set for 2032.

To meet the escalating air travel demand, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) approved the development of NMIA. The project, one of the world’s largest Greenfield International Airports, is expected to handle a minimum of 60 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo annually. The NMIA, developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, has received major clearances, including Environment & CRZ clearance, Forest/Wildlife Clearances, and Defence Clearance.

The development process involved demolishing structures in six villages, including Kopar, Koli, Chinchpada, Varcha Owala, Vaghiwali Pada, and Ulwe, with the original inhabitants receiving compensation packages under the Land Acquisition, Resettlement & Rehabilitation Act (LARR), 2013.

As the NMIA progresses towards completion, it is poised to transform air travel in the region, contributing to India’s infrastructure growth and providing a world-class travel experience for passengers.
