Microsoft is set to make a substantial investment of $1.7 billion in Indonesia, aiming to bolster the Southeast Asian nation’s digital infrastructure with cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI), Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced on Tuesday.
During his visit to Jakarta, Nadella unveiled Microsoft’s ambitious plans to expand its presence in Indonesia by investing in data centers and cloud computing facilities. This investment aims to provide Indonesia with state-of-the-art AI infrastructure, marking a significant leap forward for the country’s technological landscape.
“We’re going to lead this wave in terms of AI infrastructure that’s needed,” Nadella stated, highlighting Microsoft’s commitment to driving innovation and digital transformation in Indonesia.
Nadella held discussions with Indonesia’s outgoing President Joko Widodo and key cabinet ministers earlier in the day. The meetings focused on collaborative efforts in AI research and talent development, underscoring Microsoft’s commitment to nurturing a skilled workforce in Indonesia.
As part of its broader initiative, Microsoft plans to train 2.5 million individuals in Southeast Asia in the use of AI technologies by 2025. This initiative reflects Microsoft’s dedication to empowering individuals and businesses across the region with the tools and skills needed to thrive in the digital age.
Microsoft’s investment in Indonesia is part of its global strategy to expand support for AI development and infrastructure. Earlier initiatives include a $2.9 billion investment in cloud and AI infrastructure in Japan and a $1.5 billion investment in the UAE-based AI firm G42.
Nadella’s visit to Jakarta follows a recent meeting between Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook and President Widodo, during which Cook expressed interest in exploring the possibility of establishing a manufacturing facility in Indonesia. The growing interest from tech giants like Microsoft and Apple underscores Indonesia’s status as a key target market for technology-related investments.
Indonesia, with its large and tech-savvy population, offers immense potential for tech-driven growth and innovation. Microsoft’s significant investment in cloud and AI infrastructure is expected to catalyze Indonesia’s digital transformation efforts, paving the way for enhanced connectivity, productivity, and economic development.
Microsoft’s announcement comes on the heels of its strong financial performance, with the company surpassing Wall Street estimates for third-quarter revenue and profit. The momentum from this success further reinforces Microsoft’s commitment to driving innovation and growth in emerging markets like Indonesia.
