Maruti Suzuki Eyes Safety Milestones: Applies for Bharat-NCAP Ratings

In a significant move toward enhancing vehicle safety standards in India, Maruti Suzuki has submitted applications for Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat-NCAP) safety ratings for select vehicles, according to a senior government official.

Last year witnessed Tata Motors’ SUVs, the Safari and Harrier, making waves as the inaugural recipients of the Bharat-NCAP safety ratings. These SUVs secured a prestigious 5-star rating for both adult and child occupant protection, setting a high bar for safety in the Indian automotive industry.

The launch of Bharat-NCAP in August of the previous year marked a pivotal moment in India’s commitment to road safety. An independent evaluation protocol, Bharat-NCAP aims to uphold rigorous safety standards for automobiles, aligning with global benchmarks.

Highlighting the significance of Bharat-NCAP, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized its alignment with the finest international safety standards. He reiterated that the program is meticulously crafted to elevate road safety and vehicle safety standards beyond obligatory regulations.

Moreover, the government is contemplating a paradigm shift in highway construction metrics. As per the official, there is a proposal to transition from the current ‘road km’ measurement method to ‘lane km’ in the ongoing fiscal year. This alteration reflects the government’s strategic pivot towards bolstering expressway infrastructure, with an emphasis on constructing at least four-lane expressways.

Presently, the linear length method serves as the yardstick for gauging the progress of national highway construction and widening endeavors. However, with the evolving infrastructure landscape, the proposal to adopt ‘lane km’ as the new metric underscores the government’s proactive approach to infrastructure development.

Maruti Suzuki’s decision to pursue Bharat-NCAP safety ratings underscores its commitment to prioritizing safety in its vehicle offerings. With the automotive giant stepping forward to embrace stringent safety assessments, the Indian automotive landscape stands poised for a significant safety overhaul.

As the automotive sector charts a course towards safer roads and vehicles, the convergence of industry initiatives and governmental policies heralds a promising era for road safety in India.

Stay tuned as Maruti Suzuki’s quest for Bharat-NCAP ratings unfolds, promising safer journeys ahead for Indian motorists.
