Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest car manufacturer, anticipates potential cost escalations due to logistical challenges stemming from the ongoing Red Sea crisis, a senior company official revealed. While the auto giant exported approximately 2.7 lakh cars last year, it expects minimal disruptions to its overseas shipments despite the prevailing maritime challenges.
Rahul Bharti, Executive Officer (Corporate Affairs) at Maruti Suzuki, acknowledged the logistical hurdles posed by the Red Sea crisis during an analyst call. He cited potential increases in costs resulting from vessel rerouting and associated risks but downplayed their significance in impacting the company’s export operations.
Bharti emphasized that while dispatch lead times might be affected and uncertainties regarding vessel arrivals persist, such challenges are commonplace in the export domain and are manageable.
The Red Sea strait, a critical conduit for 30 percent of global container traffic and 12 percent of global trade, holds particular significance for India, facilitating about 80 percent of the nation’s merchandise trade with Europe.
The escalation of tensions around the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait due to attacks by Yemen-based Houthi militants since December 2023 has led to heightened shipping costs and prolonged transit times for consignments bound for Europe and the US. Ships are now circumnavigating Africa via the Cape of Good Hope route, bypassing the troubled region.
Maruti Suzuki, aiming to export at least 7.5 lakh units by the end of the decade, remains optimistic about tapping into emerging markets, particularly in Africa, and capitalizing on the recent resurgence in the Middle East region.
Bharti highlighted the potential benefits from government-signed Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), which could alleviate duty burdens on the company’s exports.
Additionally, Maruti Suzuki is poised to embark on its journey into the electric vehicle (EV) segment, with plans to commence production of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) this year. The company’s maiden BEV, a mid-sized SUV boasting an impressive range of around 550 kilometers, is slated for export to Japan and Europe while catering to the domestic market.
With meticulous attention to addressing consumer concerns such as range anxiety, Maruti Suzuki aims to deliver a high-spec vehicle that resonates with discerning customers both at home and abroad. As the automotive industry navigates global disruptions, Maruti Suzuki remains steadfast in its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and international expansion.
