Renowned Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has underscored the responsibility of the Supreme Court to safeguard its dignity amidst the State Bank of India’s (SBI) plea concerning the electoral bonds issue. Sibal’s remarks come in response to SBI’s request for an extension in disclosing electoral bond details, which he deemed as “puerile”.
In a video interview with PTI, Sibal expressed skepticism over SBI’s justification for seeking an extension, suggesting that it appears as though there’s an attempt to shield certain entities. He highlighted that the timing of SBI’s request, particularly amidst upcoming elections, raises questions about its intentions.
Sibal’s statements are pertinent as they precede a crucial hearing by a five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, which will deliberate on SBI’s application for an extension to disclose electoral bond details. The bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, will also address a separate plea seeking contempt action against SBI for allegedly disobeying the apex court’s directive to submit contribution details to political parties via electoral bonds to the Election Commission by March 6.
The senior advocate emphasized the importance of the Supreme Court’s role in upholding its dignity amidst contentious matters such as this. He asserted that the court’s acceptance of what he termed as “specious explanations” from SBI could impact its credibility.
Regarding the electoral bonds issue, Sibal reiterated concerns about its implications on the democratic process, particularly in creating an uneven playing field. He emphasized that the scheme was designed with political motives, aiming to benefit specific parties.
Sibal also expressed apprehension about potential misuse of investigative agencies once electoral bond details are disclosed. He urged opposition parties to collectively address the issue and emphasized its significance in the upcoming elections.
The developments surrounding the electoral bonds issue have gained significant attention since the Supreme Court’s verdict declaring the scheme unconstitutional on February 15. The court’s directive for disclosure of donor details by March 13 has prompted SBI’s plea for an extension till June 30.
As the Supreme Court prepares to deliberate on these matters, the spotlight remains on its role in ensuring transparency and integrity in the electoral process. Kapil Sibal’s remarks underscore the importance of upholding judicial independence and protecting democratic principles amidst evolving challenges.
