Jio Financial Services Ltd and BlackRock Financial Management have officially submitted applications to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to initiate their mutual fund business venture in India. As per SEBI’s latest update, the application, filed jointly on October 19, 2023, is currently under review for the regulator’s “in-principle approval.”
The collaboration between Jio Financial, a part of the Reliance Group helmed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, and US-based BlackRock Inc, is set as a 50:50 joint venture to introduce asset management services within the Indian market.
Their vision entails an initial investment of $150 million each into this joint venture, a move that signals a major re-entry for BlackRock into India’s asset management industry, following its dissociation from the DSP Group in 2018.
This venture capitalizes on BlackRock’s globally renowned expertise in investment and risk management, product excellence, technology, and market knowledge. In conjunction, Jio Financial Services brings to the table local market insights, robust digital infrastructure, and execution capabilities.
The application filing underscores the firms’ commitment to enter India’s burgeoning asset management sector, which has witnessed robust growth in recent years, amassing assets under management totaling Rs 49 lakh crore as of November 30, 2023.
The joint statement issued by Jio Financial and BlackRock emphasized their intention to introduce a new player to the Indian market, merging extensive scope, scale, and resources. The proposed investment of $150 million from each partner signifies a robust commitment to this joint venture.
The collaborative efforts between Jio Financial and BlackRock underscore a strategic amalgamation of global expertise and local market acumen, aiming to leverage technology, operational prowess, and profound intellectual capital to usher in a transformative phase in India’s asset management landscape.
The fate of the application lies with SEBI’s deliberation on granting the in-principle nod, a move that would catalyze BlackRock’s resurgence into India’s asset management sphere, redefining the industry landscape with innovative strategies and a comprehensive market approach.
