Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon, has continued his streak of divesting shares in the e-commerce behemoth, selling around $2.03 billion worth of Amazon shares over February 14-15. This marks Bezos’ third major stake sale in just a month, with the total value of his recent divestments surpassing $6 billion.
In his latest transaction, Bezos offloaded approximately 12 million shares of Amazon at an average price of $169.50 per share. This comes on the heels of two earlier stake sales, where he disposed of another 12 million shares each time, bringing the total tally to 36 million shares thus far.
These divestments are part of a prearranged trading plan implemented by Bezos in November, which allows for the gradual sale of up to 50 million Amazon shares throughout the year. Notably, this represents Bezos’ most significant divestiture of Amazon shares since 2021 when he relinquished his role as the company’s CEO. However, he did contribute approximately $240 million worth of Amazon shares to charitable causes last year.
The recent stake sales have led to a reduction in Bezos’ holdings in Amazon, decreasing from 976.25 million shares to 952.26 million shares.
Bezos’ decision to sell shares coincides with a period of substantial growth in Amazon’s stock price, reflecting the broader uptrend in tech stocks over the past year. Amid hopes of economic recovery and the Federal Reserve’s efforts to manage inflation, shares of technology companies have experienced significant appreciation, providing ample opportunities for industry leaders to cash in on their holdings.
Notably, Bezos’ relocation to Florida from the Seattle region in November has likely played a role in his divestment strategy. By moving to a state with no capital gains tax, Bezos stands to save approximately $430 million in taxes compared to Washington state, which recently implemented a 7 percent levy on capital gains.
Despite the significant divestitures, representatives for Bezos and Amazon have not provided additional comments on the rationale behind the stake sales or their implications for Bezos’ future financial strategies.
As Bezos continues to navigate the dynamic landscape of the tech industry and the broader financial markets, his recent divestments underscore the evolving strategies of high-profile entrepreneurs in managing their wealth and portfolio allocations.
