Following the resounding success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, India’s space agency, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is gearing up for yet another ambitious lunar endeavor with the Chandrayaan-4 mission. With discussions underway internally, ISRO Chairman S Somanath shed light on the agency’s plans to elevate its lunar exploration program to unprecedented heights.
In a statement issued on Saturday after the triumphant launch of the GSLV-F14/INSAT-3DS satellite, Somanath revealed that ISRO was meticulously crafting a “novel design” and leveraging “high-end technology” for the forthcoming Chandrayaan-4 mission. This mission, which promises to be more intricate than its predecessors, aims to achieve the remarkable feat of bringing back soil samples from the surface of the Moon to Earth.
“We are working on what Chandrayaan-4 spacecraft should contain. The first question is what Chandrayaan-4 should be having (as the payload); this is the question we are asking,” remarked Somanath, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to innovation and exploration.
Highlighting the complexity of the mission, Somanath elucidated ISRO’s intent to conduct robotic operations to collect lunar soil samples—a task that demands meticulous planning and advanced technological capabilities. Unlike the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which focused on landing on the Moon’s surface, Chandrayaan-4 will necessitate the deployment of additional spacecraft to retrieve the samples and return them to Earth.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by the current state of rocket technology, Somanath hinted at the development of a clandestine “novel design” aimed at overcoming these obstacles. While the specifics of this design remain shrouded in secrecy, Somanath’s remarks underscore the agency’s resolve to push the boundaries of space exploration.
Echoing Somanath’s sentiments, the Secretary of the Department of Space emphasized the forthcoming mission’s reliance on cutting-edge technology, which ISRO scientists are diligently developing. However, he cautioned that formal government approvals and financial allocations were prerequisites before divulging further details to the public.
In addition to unveiling plans for Chandrayaan-4, Somanath hinted at ISRO’s intention to repurpose the INSAT-3D satellite, launched in 2013, for alternative missions as its functions begin to deteriorate. While specifics regarding the satellite’s future applications remain undisclosed, Somanath assured that ISRO would provide updates once decisions were finalized.
