In response to the escalating crisis in the Red Sea, the commerce ministry of India has organized a high-level inter-ministerial meeting scheduled for January 17. The meeting aims to strategize and find a way forward for trade amid the ongoing challenges in the crucial shipping route.
Senior officials from five key ministries, including external affairs, defence, shipping, finance (department of financial services), and commerce, will participate in the deliberations. The discussion will revolve around the impact of recent attacks by Yemen-based Houthi militants on the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait—a vital passage connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean.

The situation has led to disruptions as shippers divert consignments through the Cape of Good Hope, resulting in significant delays of almost 14 days and increased freight and insurance costs. To address these challenges, new trade routes are being explored, and stakeholders, including traders, shippers, container firms, and freight forwarders, have voiced their concerns in a recent high-level meeting at the commerce ministry on January 4.
Exporters are particularly worried about potential trade disruptions, as the crisis escalates the cost of moving goods, affecting their competitiveness in global markets. The commerce ministry is closely monitoring the situation and exploring various options to mitigate the impact on India’s trade.
In addition to the inter-ministerial meeting, the commerce ministry has established an internal strategic group comprising additional secretaries to address global issues impacting the country’s trade on a daily basis. This strategic group aims to prepare swift and decisive responses to emerging challenges, ensuring that India’s trade remains resilient.
The Red Sea crisis has prompted a reassessment of trade routes and strategies, with a focus on minimizing disruptions and maintaining the competitiveness of Indian exports. The ministry is also in communication with the Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (ECGC) to ensure that export credit interest rates remain stable.
As India navigates these challenges, a collaborative and strategic approach involving multiple ministries is crucial to safeguarding the interests of the country’s trade and ensuring its resilience in the face of evolving global scenarios. The outcomes of the upcoming meeting are anticipated to shape India’s trade strategies in response to the Red Sea crisis.
