Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed India’s bold economic aspirations, forecasting a significant surge in the country’s GDP in the coming years. Speaking at the Vibrant Gujarat summit, Sitharaman outlined an optimistic trajectory for India’s economy.
By 2027-28, India is projected to become the world’s third-largest economy, boasting a GDP exceeding USD 5 trillion. Even under conservative estimates, Sitharaman anticipated India’s economy to soar to a staggering USD 30 trillion by 2047.
Currently positioned as the fifth-largest economy globally, with a GDP of approximately USD 3.4 trillion, India is on an ambitious growth trajectory aiming to surpass several major economies, including the US, China, Japan, and Germany.
The minister highlighted the Indian economy’s resilience, projecting a growth rate of 7.3% for the current fiscal year, outstripping the 7.2% growth recorded in 2022-23.
Acknowledging the inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI), Sitharaman revealed that India amassed a substantial USD 919 billion in FDI over 23 years until 2023. Impressively, a staggering 65% of this, equivalent to USD 595 billion, poured into the country’s economy during the last 8-9 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sitharaman emphasized strides in financial inclusion, citing a significant rise in the number of people holding bank accounts. From 15 crore in 2014, this figure has surged to 50 crore at present, signifying an impressive increase in access to formal banking services.
The Finance Minister’s projections underscore India’s commitment to bolstering its economy, attracting investments, and fostering financial inclusivity as key drivers of its ambitious growth targets.
The envisioned trajectory, if realized, will position India as a global economic powerhouse, carving out a formidable place in the world economy.
