In a swift and decisive operation, Indian naval warship INS Sumitra, deployed along the east coast of Somalia, responded to a distress call concerning the hijacking of an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel by pirates. The prompt action by INS Sumitra ensured the safe release of the hijacked vessel and its entire crew, showcasing the Indian Navy’s commitment to maritime security in the region.

Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal provided details of the operation, stating, “INS Sumitra, on anti-piracy operations along the East Coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden, responded to a distress message regarding the hijacking of an Iranian-flagged Fishing Vessel Iman. The vessel had been boarded by pirates, and the crew was taken as hostages.”

Upon intercepting the vessel, INS Sumitra implemented established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to compel the pirates to safely release the crew along with the vessel. The operation resulted in the successful release of all 17 crew members, and the vessel was subsequently sanitized before being allowed to proceed on its planned route.

The mission deployed by Indian naval ships in anti-piracy and maritime security operations in the Indian Ocean region underscores the Indian Navy’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of vessels and seafarers at sea. The Gulf of Aden has been a hotspot for piracy, and the Indian Navy’s presence in the region plays a crucial role in maintaining maritime security and responding to incidents promptly.

The successful resolution of this hijacking incident further highlights the operational efficiency and preparedness of the Indian Navy in dealing with maritime threats. The Navy continues to actively contribute to regional security, with its anti-piracy efforts being a vital component of ensuring the safety and freedom of navigation in key international waters.

The INS Sumitra’s latest mission exemplifies India’s dedication to upholding maritime security, protecting vital sea lanes, and fostering a safer environment for vessels traversing the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean region.
