In a groundbreaking move, India Vehicle Finance, a Mauritius-based foreign portfolio investor, has successfully raised $300 million through social bonds to invest in securitization issued by Shriram Finance, marking a significant milestone for Indian issuers in the global financial market.
The issuance, categorized under “social bonds,” represents a pioneering endeavor by an Indian entity, demonstrating the country’s emergence as a key player in international capital markets. Priced at a competitive coupon rate of 5.85%, the bonds were oversubscribed, reflecting strong investor confidence and demand for socially responsible investment opportunities.
While non-banking finance companies routinely engage in similar securitized transactions in the domestic rupee market, this deal stands out as the first of its kind where dollar funds are utilized to subscribe to local asset-backed securities. The innovative structure of the transaction opens new avenues for Indian issuers to access global capital and diversify funding sources.
The proceeds from the social bonds will be directed towards addressing specific social issues, including enhancing access to essential services, promoting financial inclusion, and generating employment opportunities, among others. In particular, the funds will support rupee-denominated pass-through certificates issued by Sansar Vehicle Finance Trust, a subsidiary of the Shriram Group, representing ownership of loans extended to small transport operators and first-time buyers from under-served communities.
Umesh Revankar, Executive Vice Chairman at Shriram Finance, emphasized the transaction’s robust collateralization and structured framework, enabling the issuance to attain a credit rating equivalent to the sovereign. This validation underscores the credibility and resilience of the Indian financial ecosystem on the global stage, fostering investor trust and confidence.
Barclays spearheaded the deal as the global coordinator, with support from prominent financial institutions including BNP Paribas, DBS Bank, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, JP Morgan, and Standard Chartered as lead managers and bookrunners. Their collective expertise and collaboration facilitated the seamless execution of the landmark transaction, further elevating India’s stature in the international financial arena.
The successful completion of the $300 million social bonds issuance underscores India’s growing prominence as an attractive investment destination and reflects the country’s commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth and social development. As Indian issuers continue to innovate and tap into global capital markets, they are poised to unlock new opportunities for advancement and prosperity on a broader scale.
