Vivek Lall, Chief Executive for General Atomics Global Corporation, a prominent figure in the American defense industry, emphasized the significant role played by collaboration between India and the US within the Quad framework in enhancing security and responding to emerging geopolitical threats.
In an exclusive interview with PTI, Lall highlighted the strategic partnership fostered through the Quad framework, involving the US, Japan, India, and Australia. He emphasized its role in addressing common challenges such as regional stability, maritime security, and counterterrorism.
“The collaboration between the U.S. and India, within the Quad framework, enhances security by fostering a strategic partnership to address common challenges, such as regional stability, maritime security, and counterterrorism,” stated Lall.
He has been actively involved in facilitating strategic defense deals between India and the United States, including the recent agreement involving General Atomic drones.
Lall, who serves on the Advisory Board of Quad Investors Network, expressed his belief that such collaboration strengthens the collective ability to respond to emerging geopolitical threats and promotes a rules-based international order.
Highlighting the importance of ongoing partnerships, Lall stated, “Working with India and the global industrial base has enhanced our aircraft. As more and more customers strive to bring our aircraft into their fleets, we’ll continue to initiate and develop partnerships that bring new and greater capabilities onto our aircraft.”
As part of General Atomics’ expansion in India, Lall noted partnerships with Indian companies such as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bharat Forge Aerospace, 114ai, and 3rdiTech. These collaborations not only enhance the capabilities of General Atomics’ aircraft but also support India’s Atmanirbhar initiative, driving the aerospace industry to new heights.
Lall expressed optimism about the future of India’s aerospace industry, stating, “The state of India’s aerospace industry is strong, and I can’t wait to see what the future will bring.”
Touching upon technological advancements, Lall revealed that the US Air Force is turning to a new breed of collaborative combat aircraft, with General Atomics Aeronautical System (GA-ASI) developing a family of unmanned collaborative aircraft known as ‘Gambit.’ These collaborative aircraft, also referred to as ‘wingmen,’ leverage high levels of autonomy and artificial intelligence to perform tasks and missions directed by their manned counterparts.
Regarding recent successful experiences, Lall mentioned General Atomics’ demonstration of Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) aircraft in the United Kingdom, calling it a first-of-its-kind achievement.
In addressing Arctic security challenges, Lall emphasized the readiness of GA’s MQ-9B SkyGuardian/SeaGuardian Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) to connect Arctic allies and enable 24/7 surveillance. The UAS can detect air, ground, surface, and subsurface targets, providing real-time intelligence to military and civil authorities.
As technology continues to evolve, Lall highlighted GA-ASI’s efforts in developing and demonstrating autonomy and artificial intelligence pilots, contributing to the operationalization of autonomy for Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs).
