In a bid to bolster its revenue streams, India aims to collect up to 140 billion rupees ($1.7 billion) in Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the next fiscal year by taxing online gambling companies, according to statements by Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra to Reuters on Saturday.
The government’s move to impose a 28% tax on funds collected by online gaming companies from their customers for every bet, announced in October, sent shockwaves through the burgeoning $1.5 billion industry, attracting global investments. The government justified the tax by citing concerns related to addiction.
For the current fiscal year ending on March 31, the government is set to collect approximately 75 billion rupees from the tax, a substantial increase from the 16 billion rupees collected in the previous year. The tax has generated 35 billion rupees in the October-December quarter alone, indicating a significant contribution to government revenues.
While acknowledging that the industry has stabilized, Malhotra cautioned that it is too early to draw conclusive remarks. A comprehensive review of the framework to tax online gambling companies is scheduled for April. However, Malhotra clarified that the review does not necessarily imply changes to the existing tax rates.
The overall Goods and Services Tax collections for the government have averaged around 1.7 trillion rupees per month. Malhotra expressed optimism, stating, “We are expecting an average monthly collection of 1.80 trillion to 1.85 trillion rupees from the next fiscal year.”
The government’s strategy to tap into the revenue potential of the online gambling sector aligns with its broader fiscal goals, but ongoing reviews will determine the sustainability and potential adjustments to the taxation framework in the coming months.
