India Reduces Windfall Tax on Petroleum Crude to Boost Domestic Refining

In a move aimed at bolstering the domestic refining industry, the Indian government has announced a reduction in the windfall tax on petroleum crude. Effective June 15, the tax will be lowered to ₹3,250 ($38.90) per metric ton from the previous rate of ₹5,200. This adjustment was detailed in a notification issued on Friday.

The windfall tax, which is reviewed every fortnight, remains unchanged at zero for diesel and aviation turbine fuel. This decision follows a recent cut on June 1, when the government reduced the tax on petroleum crude from ₹5,700 to ₹5,200 per metric ton.

The windfall tax on petroleum crude, first introduced in July 2022, was designed to regulate private refiners who were capitalizing on high refining margins by exporting fuel instead of selling it domestically. The tax aims to balance the interests of local markets and ensure adequate fuel supply within the country.

This latest reduction signals the government’s intent to support the domestic oil industry amidst fluctuating global oil prices and refining margins. By easing the tax burden, the government hopes to encourage refiners to increase their production and sales within the country, thus ensuring stability in the domestic fuel market.

Industry experts suggest that this tax cut could lead to more competitive fuel prices domestically, benefiting consumers and potentially spurring economic activity. Moreover, it aligns with the broader governmental strategy to strengthen India’s energy security and self-reliance in the petroleum sector.

As global oil markets continue to experience volatility, India’s regulatory adjustments, such as this windfall tax cut, reflect its adaptive approach to managing domestic economic priorities while navigating international market dynamics.
