A recent report from a European think-tank has shed light on India’s significant export of oil products derived from Russian crude to nations imposing sanctions on Russia, revealing the intricate dynamics of global energy trade amidst geopolitical tensions.
According to the Finland-based Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), over one-third of India’s exports of oil products to countries in the G7-led coalition, including the European Union and Australia, originated from Russian crude. This amounted to a staggering EUR 6.16 billion, equivalent to approximately $6.65 billion.
The report underscores how India’s thriving oil industry, particularly exemplified by the Jamnagar refinery operated by Reliance Industries Ltd in Gujarat, played a pivotal role in facilitating these exports. Jamnagar alone accounted for EUR 5.2 billion of oil product exports to the price cap coalition countries, showcasing the refinery’s significant contribution to India’s energy exports.
While some western nations have refrained from direct purchases of Russian oil since the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, they have continued to import petroleum products from countries like India, China, and Turkey, which remain major buyers of Russian crude oil.
Turkey’s port of Aliaga emerged as another significant exporting location of oil products made from Russian crude to the price cap coalition, further highlighting the complex network of global energy trade.
The report also delves into the economic implications of these exports, revealing that the price cap coalition countries’ imports of oil products from Russian crude generated substantial tax revenues for the Kremlin, amounting to EUR 1.7 billion from December 2022 to December 2023.
Despite geopolitical tensions and sanctions, India’s role in the global energy market remains robust, with its refineries serving as key players in meeting the energy demands of nations worldwide.
As the energy landscape continues to evolve amidst geopolitical uncertainties, reports like these provide valuable insights into the intricate web of global energy trade and its implications for both geopolitical dynamics and economic interests.
