In a significant move to strengthen bilateral relations, India and the United States have announced their commitment to enhancing trade ties and fostering collaboration in strategic areas, particularly critical minerals. The announcement was made by the United States Trade Representative, Katherine Tai, following her annual trade policy talks with India’s Trade Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi on January 12.
Despite recent diplomatic tensions arising from allegations that an Indian official was linked to a foiled plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist leader on U.S. soil, both nations have demonstrated their determination to overcome differences and focus on economic cooperation.

India has vehemently denied any involvement in the alleged plot, stating that such actions are contrary to government policy. Furthermore, India has initiated its own investigation into the allegations, emphasizing its commitment to resolving the issue transparently.
During the talks, India expressed a keen interest in establishing a bilateral critical mineral partnership with the United States. Both nations have agreed to exchange information to deepen their collaboration in this strategically important sector. An Indian official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that discussions are still in the early stages and not yet public.
“In terms of the roadmap for critical minerals, we are going to begin with fact-finding, exploring, and establishing a common vocabulary, and then develop our tools and ideas from there,” stated Katherine Tai during a news briefing in New Delhi.
Apart from critical minerals, India has urged the United States to improve visa processes for Indian business professionals and requested the restoration of duty-free access to some goods under the generalized system of preferences. This program, which India had access to for decades, was terminated by former President Donald Trump in 2019.
Additionally, Tai urged India to ensure that its policies on laptop imports do not inadvertently restrict trade, emphasizing the importance of a conducive environment for economic collaboration.
The joint statement issued after the January 12 meeting reflects the mutual commitment of India and the United States to overcoming challenges and advancing their economic partnership. As both nations embark on the path to enhancing trade ties, the collaborative efforts in critical minerals signify a shared commitment to address global challenges and foster sustainable economic growth.
