India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, emphasized the need for the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) to establish a platform for trading green credits, addressing the nation’s USD 10.1 trillion funding gap to meet its net zero commitment by 2070. Speaking at the ‘An Aspiration of Modern India’ session in GIFT City, Sitharaman underscored the importance of the IFSC in facilitating global funding for Indian companies and advancing sustainability initiatives.
Sitharaman highlighted the imminent direct listing of stocks in the Gift IFSC, a move anticipated to streamline the process for Indian companies to access global funds by being listed in India. Last year, the government took a significant step by permitting listed and unlisted companies to directly list on the IFSC exchanges at GIFT City. This initiative aims to enhance India’s presence in foreign equity markets, providing an alternative to the existing avenues of issuing depository receipts or listing debt securities on foreign markets.
The Finance Minister proposed the creation of a dedicated platform at IFSC where green credits can be traded. Green credits represent a mechanism for recognizing and trading the environmental contributions made by individuals or entities, particularly in areas such as afforestation, renewable energy usage, and solid waste management. Sitharaman urged authorities to work towards establishing this platform, envisioning it as a hub for trading credits generated by activities promoting environmental sustainability.
She pointed to the emergence of Miyawaki forests across the country, highlighting them as examples of initiatives that could generate green credits. The proposed platform would allow those involved in afforestation or other eco-friendly practices to trade their earned credits, contributing to the larger goal of bridging the funding gap required for India’s net zero commitment.
As the nation aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainability, Sitharaman sees IFSC playing a pivotal role in catalyzing financial transactions related to green initiatives. The call for a dedicated green credit trading platform reflects India’s commitment to fostering environmentally responsible practices and leveraging financial innovations for a sustainable future.
