Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) reported a 7% year-on-year increase in total sales for May 2024, reaching 63,551 units despite a scheduled bi-annual maintenance shutdown at its Sriperumbudur factory. This marks a significant growth from the 59,601 units sold in May 2023.
Domestic vehicle dispatches saw a modest 1% rise, with 49,151 units sent to dealers compared to 48,601 units in the same month last year. However, exports demonstrated a remarkable 31% increase, jumping from 11,000 units in May 2023 to 14,400 units in May 2024.
“We have maintained a healthy total sales volume in May 2024, despite a week-long routine bi-annual maintenance shutdown at our Sriperumbudur factory,” said Tarun Garg, Chief Operating Officer of HMIL. Garg emphasized that SUVs remain a crucial driver for HMIL, accounting for more than 67% of domestic sales last month.
“Our rural penetration stood at a healthy 20.1% in May,” Garg added, highlighting Hyundai’s strategic efforts to expand its market reach in rural areas, which are increasingly becoming vital for automotive sales.
The significant rise in exports showcases Hyundai’s strong performance in international markets, further solidifying its position as a leading automotive exporter from India.
SUVs Fuel Domestic Sales Growth
SUVs have continued to be the cornerstone of Hyundai’s domestic sales strategy. With more than two-thirds of its domestic sales attributed to this segment, the company has successfully tapped into the growing consumer preference for larger, versatile vehicles. This trend is expected to continue as SUVs become increasingly popular among Indian consumers.
Robust Export Performance
The 31% surge in exports underscores Hyundai’s robust global demand. The increase from 11,000 units last year to 14,400 units this year indicates a strong international presence and effective export strategies. Hyundai’s ability to maintain high export numbers, even amid operational shutdowns, reflects the company’s efficient production and supply chain management.
Rural Market Penetration
Hyundai’s concerted efforts to penetrate rural markets have paid off, with rural sales accounting for 20.1% of the total sales in May. This expansion into rural areas is crucial for sustained growth, as these regions represent a significant and growing segment of the automotive market in India.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, Hyundai aims to continue leveraging its strong product lineup and expanding its market presence both domestically and internationally. The company’s focus on SUVs and rural market expansion, coupled with robust export performance, positions it well for continued growth in the coming months.
As the automotive industry navigates challenges and opportunities, Hyundai’s strategic initiatives and resilient performance set a positive tone for the rest of the year.
