In a groundbreaking collaboration, Hyundai Motor India and the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Guidance Tamil Nadu to establish a Hydrogen Valley Innovation Hub, fostering the advancement of hydrogen-based clean energy solutions. The project, with an estimated outlay of INR 180 Crore, aims to play a pivotal role in promoting green initiatives and skill development in the region.

The MoU, signed during the recent Global Investors Meet, outlines the establishment of the Hydrogen Valley Innovation Hub, which will be developed at IIT-M’s sprawling campus in Chennai. Hyundai Motor India will contribute an investment of INR 100 Crore towards the project’s capital expenditure requirements.

IIT-Madras, known for its premier research and technological expertise, will take charge of setting up the hub and providing both the physical infrastructure and research and development facilities. Additionally, the institute will develop a comprehensive curriculum and body of knowledge to facilitate skill development. The Hydrogen Valley is expected to become a focal point for research, development, and innovation in the field of clean energy.

Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, emphasized the importance of transitioning to non-fossil fuels in line with sustainable development goals. “As our country has set definite targets towards meeting the sustainable development goals, using non-fossil fuel is of great significance. In this direction, a consortium coordinated by IIT Madras is setting up a Hydrogen Valley project,” stated Professor Kamakoti. He also highlighted the timely support from Hyundai, indicating that the funding would accelerate the growth of the consortium.

Guidance Tamil Nadu, the state government’s investment promotion agency, will play a crucial role in supporting policy advocacy related to hydrogen technologies and regulations development. The Hydrogen Valley project is poised not only to contribute to India’s green hydrogen goals but also to promote knowledge sharing and skill development.

The collaboration between Hyundai Motor India, IIT-Madras, and Guidance Tamil Nadu marks a significant step towards sustainable and innovative solutions in the realm of clean energy. The Hydrogen Valley Innovation Hub is expected to serve as a model for public-private partnerships driving advancements in green technology.
