Huawei Technologies, the Chinese tech giant, declared on Friday that it has made significant advancements in various technological fields, including operating systems and artificial intelligence. Speaking at the inaugural session of a three-day developer conference in Dongguan, Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, highlighted the company’s remarkable progress, asserting that Huawei had accomplished in a decade what took the United States and Europe three times as long.
Yu proudly announced that Huawei’s Harmony operating system is now deployed on over 900 million devices. “Harmony has made major breakthroughs. You can say in 10 years we’ve achieved what it took our European and American counterparts more than 30 years to do, in terms of building the core technology of an independent operating system,” Yu stated. This milestone underscores Huawei’s rapid development in creating a robust, independent technological ecosystem.
Furthermore, Yu emphasized Huawei’s significant strides in artificial intelligence, particularly with its Ascend AI infrastructure. According to Yu, Ascend is now the second most popular AI platform, following closely behind Nvidia, the dominant force in the AI chip market. This achievement positions Huawei as a formidable player in the global AI arena, showcasing its ability to innovate and compete with established Western tech giants.
The announcement also highlighted the shifting dynamics in the tech world, where European and American companies have traditionally held sway over operating systems and software. However, the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has provided Huawei with a unique opportunity to challenge this dominance. The integration of HarmonyOS across a vast array of devices exemplifies this trend, marking a significant shift in the global tech landscape.
Notably, Huawei’s HarmonyOS has also made impressive gains in the mobile operating system market. According to research firm Counterpoint, in the first quarter of 2024, HarmonyOS surpassed Apple’s iOS to become the second best-selling mobile operating system in China, securing a 17% market share, second only to Android. This leap in market presence further cements Huawei’s position as a leading innovator in mobile technology.
As Huawei continues to push the boundaries of technological advancement, its achievements in operating systems and artificial intelligence highlight the company’s potential to reshape the global tech industry. The rapid adoption of HarmonyOS and the growing popularity of the Ascend AI infrastructure demonstrate Huawei’s capability to compete on the world stage, heralding a new era of innovation and competition in the tech sector.
