In a historic first for the Republic Day parade, an all-women tri-services contingent from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force is set to march down Kartavya Path, showcasing the seamless integration of the nation’s armed forces.
Leading this groundbreaking contingent is 26-year-old Captain Sandhya, who expressed her pride in leading the team during this momentous occasion. The 148-member strong team, comprising Agniveers and regular recruits, has been in Delhi since early December, diligently preparing for this historic moment.
Despite the differences in drills and procedures among the three services, the contingent trained together as a cohesive unit with a shared goal – to emanate Nari Shakti (Women’s Power) in every step they take, said Captain Sandhya. She noted that women soldiers from the Navy and the Air Force initially found the task challenging due to varying procedures in the three services, such as differences in salutes and sword angles.
“The first difference comes with the salute. In the Air Force, the hand angle is different as compared to the Navy and the Army. Similarly, the sword angle is also different. But we all have practiced well and are ready for the full dress rehearsal on January 23,” Captain Sandhya explained.
Captain Sandhya, who participated in the Republic Day parade in 2017 as an NCC cadet from Delhi Directorate, emphasized the crucial role women play in the progress of the nation and their limitless potential. She highlighted that the inclusion of women soldiers in the defense services marks a historic opportunity.
This Republic Day parade, scheduled for January 26, will be predominantly women-centric, celebrating India’s democracy and its resolve to become a developed nation. Among the many firsts, 100 women artists with Indian musical instruments will herald the parade, as revealed by Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane. Women marching contingents will be a significant part of the parade, showcasing the best representation of women in this year’s Republic Day festivities.
Other special guests at the parade will include women space scientists from ISRO, yoga teachers associated with Ayushman Bharat, winners of international sports events, and Paralympic medalists. The event at Kartavya Path will not only showcase the military prowess of India but also celebrate the diverse achievements and contributions of women across various fields.
