Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India’s premier aerospace and defence company, has announced a significant 11% growth in revenue for the financial year 2023-24, reaching over Rs 29,810 crore. Despite facing formidable supply chain challenges stemming from geopolitical issues, HAL has demonstrated resilience and achieved commendable performance throughout the year.
The Bengaluru-headquartered defence PSU reported provisional and unaudited revenue figures, showcasing a substantial increase compared to the previous fiscal year, which stood at Rs. 26,928 crore. HAL’s Chairman and Managing Director (Additional Charge), C B Ananthakrishnan, attributed this remarkable growth to the company’s unwavering commitment to excellence and its ability to navigate complex market dynamics.
Ananthakrishnan highlighted that HAL’s order book remains robust, exceeding Rs 94,000 crore as of March 31, 2024, with the anticipation of securing additional major contracts in the upcoming fiscal year. Notably, HAL secured fresh manufacturing contracts worth over Rs 19,000 crore and Repair and Overhaul (ROH) contracts exceeding Rs 16,000 crore during the fiscal year 2023-24.
Among the significant achievements during the year, HAL inked an export contract with the Guyana Defence Forces for the supply of two Hindustan-228 aircraft, marking an important milestone in the company’s global presence. Additionally, the successful maiden flight of the first production series fighter of LCA Mk1A on March 28, 2024, underscored HAL’s commitment to advancing indigenous aerospace capabilities.
HAL also made strides in technological collaboration, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with General Electric, USA, for the transfer of technology and manufacturing of GE-414 aero-engines in India for the LCA MK2 Aircraft. This initiative aims to enhance India’s self-reliance in aero-engine manufacturing, with HAL set to receive 80% technology transfer.
Furthermore, HAL formed a joint venture, ‘SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd,’ with Safran Helicopter Engines, France, to facilitate the indigenous design and development of engines for Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and Deck Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH), showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation and indigenization.
In a strategic move to bolster India’s aerospace ecosystem, HAL collaborated with Airbus to establish maintenance, repair, and operations facilities for the A-320 family of aircraft in New Delhi. This collaboration not only strengthens the ‘Make-in-India’ initiative but also enhances the country’s export potential in the aerospace sector.
HAL’s impressive performance amidst challenges underscores its pivotal role in India’s aerospace and defence sector and reaffirms its commitment to technological innovation, self-reliance, and global competitiveness. As the company continues to forge ahead with its ambitious initiatives, it is poised to play a crucial role in shaping India’s aerospace landscape for years to come.
