Last reviewed: 9 October 2026. Rates and charges checked against HDFC Bank’s official gold loan rates page.
The HDFC Bank gold loan interest rate currently runs from 9.00% to 19.00% a year. The bank’s own disclosure for January–March 2026 shows an average rate of 10.86% for gold loans it sanctioned in that quarter. That spread is wide, so the rate you get depends heavily on how much you borrow, for how long, and your relationship with the bank. This guide sets out what HDFC charges today, what a loan actually costs once fees are added, and how the RBI’s 2026 gold loan rules change how much you can borrow.

How much can you borrow against your gold?
Since 1 April 2026, every bank and NBFC has had to follow the Reserve Bank of India’s harmonised gold-lending directions. The biggest change for borrowers is the loan-to-value (LTV) cap, which now depends on the size of the loan rather than being a flat 75%:
| Loan amount | Maximum LTV |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹2.5 lakh | 85% of the gold’s assessed value |
| ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh | 80% |
| Above ₹5 lakh | 75% |
In practice: if HDFC values your jewellery at ₹2,50,000, you can borrow up to ₹2,12,500. Lenders value only the gold content, not stones or making charges, so the assessed value is usually lower than what you paid at the jeweller.
Other borrower protections under the 2026 rules
- Bullet-repayment loans (where you pay interest and principal together at the end) for personal use are capped at 12 months.
- Return of gold: once you repay in full, the lender must hand back your gold within seven working days, or pay you ₹5,000 for each day of delay.
- The LTV limit applies throughout the loan, not just at the start. If gold prices fall sharply, the bank can ask you to top up the collateral or part-repay.
What an HDFC gold loan really costs: a worked example
Headline rates tell only part of the story. Here is a simple one-year example, assuming you borrow ₹2,00,000 at HDFC’s average rate of 10.86% and repay everything at the end:
| Interest for 12 months (₹2,00,000 × 10.86%) | ₹21,720 |
| Processing fee (1% + 18% GST) | ₹2,360 |
| Valuation charge (₹350 + 18% GST) | ₹413 |
| Total cost of borrowing | ₹24,493 |
That works out to roughly 12.2% of the amount borrowed, a little above the quoted rate because of fees. Stamp duty, which varies by state, comes on top. Borrowers who qualify for rates near the 9% end of the range pay noticeably less; those priced near 19% pay almost double the interest.
When pre-closure charges matter
HDFC charges 2% if you close the loan within 30 days and 1% between 31 and 180 days. If you expect to repay quickly, for example from a bonus or a pending payment, either wait past the 180-day mark or factor the charge into your comparison. Micro and small enterprises with fixed-rate gold loans up to ₹50 lakh pay no foreclosure charge when repaying from their own funds.
Documents needed
- PAN card or Form 60
- Aadhaar (or another officially valid KYC document such as passport, voter ID or driving licence)
- Recent photographs
- The gold jewellery or bank-issued gold coins you are pledging. Bullion and gold ETFs are not accepted as collateral.
Is an HDFC Bank gold loan right for you?
It suits you if you need money within a day, have a modest credit score, or want a cheaper alternative to a personal loan or credit card debt. Existing HDFC customers with a good repayment history are more likely to be offered rates near the lower end of the range.
Think twice if you may struggle to repay on time. Missed payments carry interest at the contracted rate, and after notice the bank can auction pledged gold. It is also worth comparing public-sector banks, which often price small gold loans below private lenders. See our guides to SBI and ICICI Bank gold loan rates, or the full gold loan comparison.

Frequently asked questions
What is the HDFC Bank gold loan interest rate today?
HDFC disclosed a range of 9.00% to 19.00% for gold loans issued between January and March 2026, with an average of 10.86%. Your rate depends on loan size, tenure and profile.
Can I prepay an HDFC gold loan?
Yes. There is no charge after 180 days. Closing earlier costs 1% (31–180 days) or 2% (within 30 days), plus GST.
How much loan will I get per gram of gold?
It depends on the purity and the market price on the day of valuation. Under RBI rules the bank can lend up to 85% of the assessed value for loans up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% up to ₹5 lakh and 75% above that.
Does a gold loan affect my credit score?
