Rajiv Jain, a prominent investor, has seen his debut venture into four key Adani Group companies yield substantial gains of approximately $2.4 billion, witnessing a remarkable surge in the Indian conglomerate’s fortunes post a damaging short-seller report last year.
Jain’s staggering $1.9 billion investment in Gautam Adani’s empire has magnified by an astounding 130% to reach approximately $4.3 billion within just 10 months, as per Bloomberg’s calculations. The recent doubling of the stock price of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. in Mumbai trading on Wednesday stands as a testament to the group’s resurgence since GQG Partners Inc. initially acquired a stake in the company back in March. The shares are poised to conclude at a record high after marking a significant 2% surge during the day.
While Adani Green Energy Ltd. witnessed a doubling from GQG’s initial purchase price in March, the flagship Adani Enterprises Ltd. achieved this milestone in December. Adani Energy Solutions Ltd., part of the initial four group firms that GQG invested in shortly after the conglomerate faced a severe blow due to a short-seller report, remains around 10% away from reaching this level. The current shareholding specifics of GQG Partners in the Adani group are not readily available.
Jain, an emerging market investor, defied market sentiments by purchasing beleaguered Adani shares following Hindenburg Research’s accusations of accounting fraud, contentions consistently refuted by the company. The Adani conglomerate’s stocks had plunged by over $150 billion at one juncture, and a recent rally spanning six weeks has significantly bolstered Jain’s investments.
The recent surge in stock prices is largely attributed to the Indian Supreme Court’s dismissal of appeals for further probes into Adani’s business operations, coupled with a substantial $553-million investment by a US-backed agency in the group’s Sri Lankan port business.
The asset management firm funneled an additional $1 billion into Adani’s flagship and green energy units in June, followed by including Adani Power Ltd. in its portfolio in August. Since its inclusion, Adani Power shares have ascended by nearly 80%.
As of November’s end, GQG Partners revealed that their investments in Adani had exceeded a staggering $7 billion, signaling a remarkable uptick from their initial positions.
Jain’s astute investments in Adani Group companies underscore the remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the conglomerate, defying odds and short-term adversities, ultimately reaping substantial financial gains.
