Google Plans to Rebrand AI Chatbot Bard as Gemini, Introduces Paid Tier

In a strategic move, Google is reportedly set to rebrand its AI chatbot Bard as Gemini and introduce a paid tier for enhanced functionalities, according to a recent report by 9to5Google. The renaming aligns Bard with the foundation model powering the AI assistant, which is now referred to as Gemini.

A changelog published by Google on February 7 mentioned the shift from “Bard” to “Gemini.” Additionally, the report highlighted the introduction of “Gemini Advanced,” which was initially announced as “Bard Advanced” in December last year. This Advanced model, available from February 7, provides users access to Gemini Ultra, positioning itself as a premium, paid tier.

Gemini Ultra, unveiled last year, represents the most substantial and capable system based on the Gemini 1.0 model. It is finely tuned for intricate tasks such as advanced reasoning, coding, and solving complex mathematical problems. With the introduction of a paid tier, Google aims to offer users an elevated experience with additional features and capabilities.

As part of this strategic rebranding, the AI chatbot is also anticipated to have its own Android app, resembling the existing Google Assistant app. However, the initial availability is expected to be limited to the United States on select devices, including Pixel devices and the Galaxy S24 series. The report suggests that the app will gradually expand to more regions and languages after the initial rollout phase.

Last week, Google augmented Bard’s capabilities by introducing image generation powered by the Imagen 2 model. The company also expanded the availability of the AI chat assistant, now driven by the Gemini Pro model, in more regions. The support for over 40 languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu, has further enhanced its accessibility and user base.

The move to introduce a paid tier for Gemini aligns with Google’s broader strategy to monetize advanced AI capabilities. As the competition in the AI chatbot space continues to intensify, Google aims to carve its niche by providing a comprehensive and premium experience for users willing to invest in enhanced features and functionalities. The rebranding and introduction of the paid tier are anticipated to drive further innovation and growth in Google’s AI ecosystem.
