In a significant surge, gold soared to a near one-month high on Wednesday, buoyed by a weaker dollar and diminishing Treasury yields following the release of data indicating a subdued rise in U.S. consumer prices. This development has heightened expectations of a potential interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve.
Spot gold experienced an impressive climb of over 1%, reaching $2,386.63 per ounce by 1816 GMT. Similarly, U.S. gold futures for June delivery settled 1.5% higher at $2,394.90 per ounce.
Phillip Streible, chief market strategist at Blue Line Futures, remarked, “The consumer price index data could be an early indication that over time inflation will cool and the Fed will make its first interest rate cut.”
According to the data, U.S. CPI rose by 0.3% last month, slightly lower than the 0.4% increase recorded in both March and February. This trend suggests a resumption of the downward trajectory in inflation at the onset of the second quarter, aligning with financial market expectations for a rate cut in September.
Economists polled by Reuters had anticipated a 0.4% rise in CPI for the month, with a year-on-year advancement of 3.4%.
The weakening dollar, down 0.6% against a basket of major currencies to its lowest level in over a month, contributed to gold’s appeal for investors holding other currencies. Additionally, benchmark 10-year Treasury yields touched a more than one-month low.
Jim Wyckoff, senior analyst at Kitco Metals, highlighted the technical aspects, stating, “Technically, the gold futures bulls have the firm overall near-term technical advantage. Bulls’ next upside price objective is to produce a close in June futures above solid resistance at $2,400.00.”
Traders are now factoring in approximately a 74% probability of a U.S. rate cut in September, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Lower interest rates typically diminish the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold.
Amidst the rally in precious metals, spot silver surged by 3.6% to $29.61 per ounce, while palladium gained 3% to $1,007.19, and platinum climbed over 3% to $1,062.20, reaching a near one-year high.
As investors closely monitor economic indicators and Fed policy signals, the precious metals market remains dynamic, with gold’s rally reflecting shifting sentiments amidst evolving macroeconomic conditions.
