Gold prices edged lower on Tuesday as the US dollar strengthened, prompting investors to adopt a cautious stance ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting conclusion scheduled for Wednesday. Spot gold slid by 0.3% to $2,153.60 per ounce, hovering close to its one-week low reached on Monday. Similarly, US gold futures eased by 0.3% to $2,157.30.
The dollar surged by 0.5%, hitting a more than two-week high, thereby making gold relatively more expensive for holders of other currencies. This uptick in the dollar’s value, coupled with anticipation surrounding the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting outcomes, prompted some investors to reduce their exposure to gold holdings.
Giovanni Staunovo, an analyst at UBS, noted, “With the FOMC meeting approaching and some concern of a more hawkish FOMC statement… some market participants prefer to hold a more cautious stance by reducing their (gold) holdings.” The focus remains on comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell regarding updated interest rate projections, which are expected to be unveiled on Wednesday.
Gold prices experienced a 1% decline last week following robust US economic data, which revealed solid increases in consumer prices for February and higher-than-expected producer prices. These figures tempered hopes for imminent Fed rate cuts, as higher interest rates diminish the allure of holding non-yielding assets like gold.
Currently, traders are pricing in a 55% chance of a Fed rate cut in June, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Staunovo remains optimistic about gold’s prospects, citing renewed demand from financial investors via exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and sustained central bank purchases. He anticipates gold to potentially reach a new record high of $2,250 per ounce by year-end.
In the broader precious metals market, spot silver declined by 0.5% to $24.91 per ounce, while platinum lost 1.1% to $902.85. Palladium recorded a more significant decline, slipping by 3.1% to $1,000.61 per ounce.
As investors await the Federal Reserve’s decision and Powell’s remarks, the dynamics of the gold market are poised for potential shifts depending on the central bank’s stance on interest rates and monetary policy outlook.
