Franklin Templeton made waves in the cryptocurrency world on Monday by revealing its official filing for a spot ethereum exchange-traded fund (ETF), joining a growing list of contenders aiming to launch similar products in the market.
The announcement comes hot on the heels of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) approval of 11 spot bitcoin ETFs in January, a landmark decision that marked a significant milestone for the crypto industry, which had been advocating for regulatory approval of such products for over a decade.
A spot crypto ETF closely tracks the market price of the underlying digital asset, offering investors exposure to the token’s performance without requiring direct ownership.
With Franklin Templeton’s entry into the race, there are now eight ETF providers vying to introduce spot ether ETFs, all of whom ventured into the market with spot bitcoin products last month.
While industry giants like BlackRock and Fidelity have quickly amassed assets of $4.18 billion and $3.49 billion, respectively, through their spot bitcoin ETFs, Franklin Templeton finds itself trailing behind in terms of assets under management. Data from BitMEX Research reveals that assets in Franklin’s Bitcoin ETF currently total a modest $77 million, with seven out of the nine recently launched spot bitcoin ETFs boasting assets exceeding $100 million.
Despite its comparatively smaller footprint, the veteran asset management firm, established in 1947, remains undeterred and is actively promoting its spot bitcoin ETF through targeted marketing efforts, including Google ads.
Meanwhile, the SEC’s recent delay in ruling on Grayscale Investments’ application to convert its ethereum trust product into a spot ETF, along with BlackRock’s postponed application to launch a similar product, has intensified anticipation within the crypto community. VanEck was the first to file for a spot ethereum ETF, with the SEC expected to render a decision by May 23.
Coinbase Custody, a subsidiary of crypto exchange Coinbase, has been designated to hold the proposed ETF’s ether in custody, underscoring the growing involvement of established players in the crypto space. The company also serves as the proposed custodian for BlackRock’s ethereum ETF, highlighting the increasing convergence between traditional finance and the burgeoning crypto market.
Franklin Templeton’s foray into the spot ethereum ETF arena adds another layer of excitement to the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency investment products, signaling broader acceptance and integration of digital assets into mainstream financial markets. As regulatory frameworks continue to evolve, investors eagerly await further developments in the rapidly expanding crypto ETF space.
