The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced a three-year high interest rate of 8.25% on employees’ provident fund (EPF) deposits for the financial year 2023-24. This decision comes after a marginal increase from 8.15% to 8.25% for the previous fiscal year 2022-23, signaling positive news for over six crore EPFO subscribers.
The move marks a reversal from the trend seen in recent years, where interest rates had witnessed a gradual decline. In March 2022, the EPFO had set the interest rate at 8.15%, which was slightly higher than the 8.10% rate for the preceding year. However, in March 2022, the interest rate had dipped to an over four-decade low of 8.10% from 8.5% in 2020-21, eliciting concerns among subscribers.
A source revealed that the decision to fix the interest rate at 8.25% for 2023-24 was made by the EPFO’s apex decision-making body, the Central Board of Trustees (CBT), during its meeting held on Saturday. This move reflects the organization’s commitment to providing favorable returns to its subscribers amid evolving economic conditions.
The decision on the interest rate by the CBT will now be forwarded to the Ministry of Finance for concurrence. Once ratified by the government, the interest rate for 2023-24 will be credited directly into the accounts of EPFO’s vast subscriber base.
It is noteworthy that the EPFO’s interest rate is determined annually, and the government’s approval is sought before implementation. Over the past decade, interest rates have seen fluctuations, with the rate hovering between 8.25% and 8.75% during different financial years.
The announcement of a higher interest rate for 2023-24 brings relief to EPFO subscribers, particularly amid economic uncertainties and inflationary pressures. It underscores EPFO’s commitment to safeguarding the financial interests of its members, ensuring stable returns on their savings towards retirement.
As EPFO continues to navigate through economic challenges and evolving market dynamics, the decision to set the interest rate at 8.25% for the upcoming fiscal year reflects a positive step towards providing financial security and stability to millions of employees across the country.
