Delhi’s economic landscape witnessed a substantial 14% increase in its per capita income, soaring from Rs 3,89,529 to Rs 4,44,768 in the financial year 2022-23, showcasing significant growth compared to the national average. This data was unveiled in the ‘Statistical Handbook-2023,’ a comprehensive compilation of socio-economic metrics for the capital, unveiled by the Department of Economics and Statistics.
The capital’s per capita income surge to Rs 4,44,768 in contrast to the national average of Rs 1,72,276 is a noteworthy achievement, reflecting Delhi’s economic vibrancy. Planning Department Minister Atishi emphasized the Delhi government’s strides in public services, marking a monumental shift despite numerous challenges.
An essential contributor to this transformation was the enhancement of public transportation services. With an average of 41 lakh passengers daily, Delhi witnessed a robust usage of its DTC buses, with over 7,200 DTC and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) buses operating in the city. Notably, 1,300 buses among them were electric, showcasing Delhi’s leadership in the country’s electric vehicle evolution.
The growth in infrastructure and utility connections was equally commendable. The city observed a surge of around 2.8 lakh new electricity consumers in 2023, consuming 859 million units collectively. Additionally, a staggering 3.41 crore electricity bills amounting to zero were generated, part of the government’s initiative offering 100% electricity subsidy for monthly usage of up to 200 units.
Water connections followed a similar trajectory with over 1 lakh new consumers added in the same period, underlining the government’s commitment to expanding basic amenities to its residents.
The welfare initiatives undertaken by the Kejriwal government showcased a robust commitment to social inclusivity. Over 4.07 lakh elderly received pensions, 1.70 lakh girls benefitted from the Ladli Scheme, and 1,13,039 individuals with special needs received financial assistance in 2023.
Minister Atishi expressed pride in the government’s accomplishments despite obstacles, crediting the Arvind Kejriwal-led administration for setting new benchmarks in public service delivery during 2023.
The Statistical Handbook not only highlights Delhi’s economic surge but also underscores the government’s concerted efforts towards inclusive growth and sustainable development, painting a promising picture for the national capital’s future.
