India’s state-run coal giant, Coal India, is gearing up to meet the surging demand for coal by launching operations at new mines and expanding the capacity of existing ones, according to its chairman, P.M. Prasad.
In response to growing energy needs, Coal India is set to commence operations at five new mines with a combined annual capacity of 14.3 million tons in the upcoming fiscal year. Additionally, the company plans to enhance the capacity of at least 16 existing mines to address the escalating demand for coal, primarily driven by the power sector.
India’s reliance on coal has intensified in recent months to meet record power demand, with coal-fired power output surpassing renewable energy growth for the first time in several years. Coal India, being the world’s largest coal miner, has witnessed a surge in profits and share prices since early 2023, propelled by its robust output.
Prasad revealed that Coal India is poised to exceed its production target for the second consecutive year, with a record output expected to reach 838 million tons for the fiscal year ending in March. To sustain this momentum, the company aims to begin the next fiscal year with initial stockpiles of 80 million tonnes, marking a significant increase from the previous year.
Amidst rising costs, Coal India has implemented strategies to manage expenses, including higher outsourcing of mining activities and natural attrition of employees. The company is also exploring opportunities to diversify its portfolio by venturing into solar and coal-fired power generation while actively seeking lithium assets in Australia to secure access to critical minerals essential for the energy transition.
Prasad emphasized Coal India’s commitment to sustainability and efficiency, highlighting the company’s participation in the exploration of lithium assets in Australia, a key step in aligning with India’s evolving energy landscape.
Despite challenges posed by fluctuations in global coal prices and increased imports of thermal coal, Coal India remains steadfast in its mission to meet domestic demand while exploring avenues for sustainable growth and expansion.
As Coal India navigates the complexities of the evolving energy sector, its proactive approach to production expansion and diversification underscores its pivotal role in India’s energy security and economic development.
