Bitcoin Surges Toward Record High, Set for Largest Monthly Gain Since 2020

Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, is on track for its most substantial monthly gain in over three years, poised to surpass its previous record high as cash inflows into listed bitcoin funds drive a robust rally.

In Asian morning trade on Thursday, Bitcoin stood firm at $62,000, nearing its overnight peak of $63,933. With a monthly gain exceeding 45%, this surge marks the most significant increase since December 2020. Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, has also surged in February, climbing to $3,429, representing a 50% increase.

Analysts, such as Tony Sycamore from IG Markets, anticipate Bitcoin to test and potentially surpass the $69,000 mark, propelling it beyond its previous record high reached during the cryptocurrency boom of November 2021.

The surge in Bitcoin’s price comes amidst the approval and launch of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States this year, attracting new investors and revitalizing interest in cryptocurrencies. According to LSEG data, the ten largest spot bitcoin ETFs witnessed a massive influx of $420 million in funds on Tuesday alone, with significant volumes recorded in ETFs managed by Grayscale, Fidelity, and BlackRock.

Traders are also flocking to Bitcoin ahead of April’s halving event, a process occurring every four years that halves the rate of token issuance and miner rewards. With the supply of bitcoin capped at 21 million, and nearly 19 million already mined, the event is driving anticipation and further bolstering demand.

Moreover, the prospect of the Federal Reserve implementing a series of interest rate cuts this year has fueled investor appetite for higher-yielding and more volatile assets. With foreign exchange volatility at two-year lows and the U.S. equity volatility index returning to pre-pandemic levels, investors are turning to Bitcoin as a potential hedge against inflation and market uncertainty.

The remarkable surge in Bitcoin’s price underscores the growing mainstream acceptance and adoption of cryptocurrencies, signaling a significant shift in the global financial landscape. As Bitcoin continues its upward trajectory, investors remain cautiously optimistic about its future potential and its role in shaping the future of finance.
