Bitcoin, the world’s leading cryptocurrency, soared past the $50,000 level for the first time in over two years, fueled by expectations of forthcoming interest rate cuts and recent regulatory approvals for U.S. exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking its price.
On Monday, Bitcoin recorded a remarkable 16.3% increase since the beginning of the year, reaching its highest level since December 27, 2021. At 12:56 p.m. EST (1756 GMT), Bitcoin was trading at $49,899, marking a 4.96% surge for the day, with the cryptocurrency oscillating around the $50,000 milestone.
Antoni Trenchev, co-founder of crypto lending platform Nexo, described the achievement of the $50,000 mark as a significant milestone for Bitcoin, especially considering the recent launch of spot ETFs. Last month’s ETF launch, despite initially failing to propel Bitcoin above the psychological threshold, led to a subsequent 20% sell-off.
The positive sentiment surrounding Bitcoin also spilled over into the broader cryptocurrency market, with related stocks experiencing notable gains on Monday. Crypto exchange Coinbase saw a 4.9% increase, while crypto miners Riot Platforms and Marathon Digital surged by 10.8% and 11.9%, respectively. Shares of software firm MicroStrategy, known for its significant Bitcoin holdings, also rose by 10.2%.
Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, also witnessed a price surge, rising by 4.12% to $2,607.57.
The recent surge in Bitcoin’s price is largely attributed to the increased inflow into BTC spot ETFs following regulatory approvals. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the first U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs on January 10, marking a significant milestone for the cryptocurrency industry after more than a decade of efforts to introduce such products to the market.
Matteo Greco, a research analyst at fintech investment firm Fineqia International, highlighted the slowing outflows from Grayscale Investment’s Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, coupled with significant inflows into BTC Spot ETFs. Analysts project that flows into these new ETFs could range from $10 billion to $100 billion this year alone, with further potential growth in the coming years.
Investors are eagerly awaiting the SEC’s decision on pending applications for ETFs tied to the spot price of Ether, with expectations that approvals could further boost market sentiment.
In addition to ETF developments, investors are anticipating the upcoming Bitcoin “halving” expected in April, which historically has led to price rallies. With these significant events on the horizon, analysts believe that Bitcoin’s recent milestone is just the beginning of a potentially bullish trend for the cryptocurrency market.
